Art and Photography

Art and Design Department

The Art and Photography is ran by Miss Rhodes, the Curriculum Leader for Art and Photography who is a mixed media and textiles specialist. The department is housed in a purpose built block with good provision for photography, ceramics and fine art practice. We provide a safe, nurturing and exciting environment for boys to develop their artistic talents and ideas through a range of styles and approaches.

Throughout KS3 the boys are encouraged to develop their confidence and ability with first-hand observational drawing and developing the basic sketching skills. These skills are the foundation for exciting and progressive art projects that lead the boys into diverse and quality outcomes at KS4 and KS5. We aim to equip all students at KS3 with a confident attitude to work and expect all pupils to give their full effort to every task. We support students with their creative ideas and talents and encourage students to take creative risks. These qualities are the key development points for a successful, tenacious and progressive student.

At GCSE the Art department offers the Edexcel Art & Design GCSE course which is taken over three years. The course is 60% coursework and 40% exam. The course is designed to allow students to explore their creative styles and refine their studies and outcomes. This work will be presented in a portfolio of work that demonstrates all the skills, processes and individual styles developed throughout the course.

As part of their GCSE preparation, all students are expected to complete coursework tasks in their own time to support their projects. It is vital that students are attending after school coursework sessions weekly in order to make use of the materials and facilities in the department. These are run on different days by Miss Rhodes and form a vital part of the development of quality work.

Post 16 the department provides opportunities for students to explore Photography as well as Fine Art at A Level. The department has access to digital cameras and equipment such as studio lighting. Both Fine Art and Photography are run in workshop style sessions, where students are expected to build upon basic skills and techniques to pursue their artistic ideas. It is recommended that students opting for Photography have access to a digital SLR so that they may continue their practice outside of school sessions.

Students opting for A Level Art and Photography courses will have the opportunity to participate in group critiques of work, workshops on building a portfolio and mock interview processes.
