Desborough College has a rich history dating back over 130 years, with our crest encapsulating our mission and symbolising our heritage, traditions, and enduring commitment to educational excellence.

Every element of the crest carries meaning: the shield represents our heritage and academic excellence; the chevron reflects aspiration and personal growth; the stag symbolises wisdom and longevity; gold represents generosity and elevation of mind; and purple reflects sovereignty and justice. Together, these symbols express the character and ambition we seek to nurture in every young person who joins our community.
Our traditional Latin motto, “strenuis ardua cedunt,” has been interpreted into two simple, but powerful words: Dream and Endeavour.

Dream

Picture
To Dream is to be ambitious about what is possible. We want every student to develop the confidence to set high aspirations for themselves and to imagine how they might make a positive difference to the world around them — locally, nationally and internationally. We encourage our students to think beyond the expected, to discover their passions and to consider the legacy they might leave behind.

We want our young people to be pioneering: to push boundaries, embrace new ideas and have the courage to express themselves. Ambition should be accompanied by curiosity, optimism, and a sense of enjoyment. At Desborough, we believe that the pursuit of a dream should be a source of fulfilment, and we encourage our students to smile along the way.

Endeavour

To Endeavour is to turn ambition into action. Dreams become reality through determination, effort and a willingness to embrace challenge. We therefore develop four qualities that enable our students to thrive: Connection, Hard Work, Creative and Critical Thinking, and Resilience.

Connection
Endeavour never happens in isolation. We are part of a diverse and interconnected global community. We encourage our students to develop mutual understanding, cultural awareness and strong communication skills, enabling them to engage confidently and respectfully with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. We want our students to understand their responsibilities to others and to the planet, making thoughtful choices that help ensure future generations can also thrive.
Hard Work
We believe there are no shortcuts to meaningful achievement. Hard work, commitment, and a strong work ethic enable our students to fulfil their potential and take genuine pride in what they accomplish.

Whether the achievement is great or small, knowing that it has been earned through sustained effort creates a sense of fulfilment. Our students learn that effort matters, and that their example can inspire those around them.
Creative & Critical Thinking
We encourage our students to embrace challenge and to see problems as opportunities. Through creative thinking, they learn to imagine possibilities and develop solutions that may never have been considered before. Through critical thinking, they learn to question assumptions, examine evidence carefully, and consider different perspectives before deciding what to believe or do. These are essential skills for academic success, but also for navigating an increasingly complex world.
 Resilience
We believe that learning is a process of growth. Students will not always get things right, and that is an important part of their development. We encourage them to reflect on their experiences, learn from mistakes, and respond positively when faced with setbacks. Resilience gives our students the confidence to persevere, to pick themselves up when things do not go according to plan, and to return stronger and wiser from their experience.

Together, these values give meaning to our motto: Dream and Endeavour. We want our students to leave Desborough with ambitious dreams for their future and, just as importantly, the knowledge, character, confidence, and determination to pursue them.
