Personal development is an integral part of the Sixth Form experience at Desborough College. Students benefit from dedicated daily tutor time, providing a consistent opportunity for guidance, reflection and individual support, alongside a highly committed pastoral team who know our students well and are available to support them throughout their time in the Sixth Form. Our tutor programme also looks deliberately beyond academic study, preparing students for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges of life beyond school. Sessions explore a broad range of practical and relevant themes, including careers, personal finance, travel, relationships, independence and wellbeing, helping students to develop the knowledge, confidence and judgement required to thrive as young adults.
Leadership and service are central to our vision for Sixth Form students. Through our House system, Sixth Form students take on positions as House Leaders, working alongside students across the College and helping to shape the wider life of their House. They lead charitable initiatives, organise community service projects and support events that bring students together, developing the qualities of leadership, communication, organisation and responsibility through meaningful experience. Sixth Form students also have the opportunity to become Study Mentors, using their own academic experience to support younger students in developing effective learning habits and confidence. Beyond the College, our students contribute to reading development within a number of local primary schools, helping younger pupils to develop the confidence and enjoyment that come from becoming successful readers. These opportunities reflect our belief that leadership is not simply about holding a position; it is about using your abilities in the service of others.
Our commitment to personal development is further strengthened through the Desborough Road Map, our programme of academic, vocational and personal enrichment. The Road Map establishes a series of milestones that we expect every Sixth Form student to work towards throughout the year, encouraging them to challenge themselves academically, intellectually and personally. Opportunities include applying for competitive summer schools, entering national competitions, pursuing academic and vocational enrichment, developing leadership experience, and taking part in activities that promote health and wellbeing. The aim is to ensure that every student builds a rich portfolio of experiences alongside their academic qualifications, developing the curiosity, resilience, confidence and independence needed to make the most of their future. In true Desborough fashion, we want our Sixth Form students not simply to prepare for their next destination, but to Dream and Endeavour in ways that will shape the person they become.
