“I chose Desborough because I felt that the resources were good, and so were the teachers,”

Dexter, Year 7

FAQs from our Virtual Session
  • What is the school’s stance on Bullying, Racism, and Inclusion?
  • The school has a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and racism. We are a multi-cultural school with a strong provision for inclusion led by Mr Brar. Each member of staff has undertaken the ‘Show Racism the Red Card,’ online training module and any pupil who may make a racist remark also takes this training.
We are a listening school with an email system in place where boys can email any reports of bullying to an anonymous email, meaning any incidents can be dealt with swiftly and appropriately.
  • Are Year 7 sets based on SATS or CATS results?
  • In Key Stage 3, boys are placed in mixed-ability sets for all subjects. This is done so that we can deliver the highest possible standard of teaching to all pupils, and teachers scaffold teaching so that all abilities can achieve. This also prepares the boys better for their GCSE studies.
In KS4, when GCSEs are taken, all subjects other than Maths, English and Science are mixed ability due to the nature of the options the boys choose to take. We feel that mixed-ability setting removes the demotivation of being placed in a lower set for potentially a whole school career, and the overconfidence of being placed in a higher ability set.
It is a common misconception that setting pupils leads to behaviour issues in lower sets. There is no guarantee that behaviour will be outstanding in a higher ability set, as behaviour is a result of outstanding teaching and not a pupil’s ability in the subject.
  • Does the school canteen have provision for halal, vegetarian and vegan food?
  • The school canteen can provide for all dietary requirements, for further and more specific information please email [email protected].
  • What is the normal induction process?
  • Year 6 pupils will come into the school for their induction day during the summer term. At the start of Year 7, they shall have a day where it is only themselves and Year 12 in the school; they shall be set up with school email, be given a tour and complete other activities to aid them in settling in.
We also run a Get Set programme during the summer holidays to aid pupils in making new friends, meet some teachers and have some fun on the school site.
  • How much homework is set?
  • Each pupil is given a homework schedule which will aid them in managing their time; homework can also be viewed on our ClassCharts app by parents and pupils via their device.
