LibraryMrs A Hallissey | Head Librarian
The library is at the heart of Desborough College. Students are encouraged to research to extend their knowledge and read for pleasure. The library is a hive of activity where all year groups mix to enjoy the collaborative atmosphere. We have a dedicated team of staff and pupil librarians who are always on hand to assist the students with any queries.
The Library has many ways that it supports both staff and students. Years 7 & 8 enjoy a weekly Library reading lesson to improve their reading skills and to read for pleasure. This is important for attainment as well as for empathy and knowledge and understanding of others. We use the Accelerated Reader programme which has proved incredibly popular with students and we have been recognised as a Champion school by Renaissance. We have regular events in the Library to celebrate book awards, author visits and other activities to support reading both for pleasure and academic interest. We have a large range of fiction that staff are constantly researching to keep up to date and information books,. We use Access-It as our library catalogue and use Wheelers Books for our e-books, providing extensive reading lists. We have a range of periodicals and subscribe to online research tools including Britannica, J-STOR and The Day. We support all subjects on the curriculum across the school and have a dedicated area for sixth form students to study. We also take care to have a several resources that are not on the curriculum to support students with the Extended Project Qualification, outside interests and encourage wider reading recommended by Universities. We teach information literacy lessons on how to research, fake news, organising and analysing information and encourage critical thinking, problem solving and digital literacy which are vital life skills. |
