In the languages department we aim to promote communication in other languages, this being a key skill in our “global village” – we strive to instill the confidence to articulate one’s needs, providing useful tools for the workplace, travelling or encountering different cultures.
At Desborough, languages are found to be hugely rewarding in the classroom, we aim to find the fun in language and to enable our students to be confident, active participants in an increasingly multicultural world. Key Stage 3
What will my child learn in Languages? In languages students will use group work, role plays, and collaborative work to manipulate key concepts in language. Resources are highly interactive, fun, and the spoken language is key. Through thinking; students will be encouraged to solve problems and think for themselves, finding pathways to link linguistic ideas. How are Languages assessed? Students will be assessed at the end of each topic area or half term period. Assessments are cumulative and assess students’ knowledge of the entire year in each assessment. Identify and use tenses or other structures which convey the present, past, and future as appropriate to the language being studied Use and manipulate a variety of key grammatical structures and patterns Develop and use a wide-ranging and deepening vocabulary that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests Use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation Listen to a variety of forms of spoken language to obtain information and respond appropriately Transcribe words and short sentences that they hear Initiate and develop conversations What resources will support my child’s learning? What will my child learn in Languages? In languages we study a variety of topics, from poverty, environment, technology, friends and family, customs and festivals, these topics are relevant to their environment and the world around them. These topics are referred to in themes;
With each issue students will interrogate texts and use their knowledge to manipulate authentic material. They will learn to answer in target language and write on chosen topics expressing an informed opinion. How are Languages taught? What will my child learn in Languages? Languages enable a student to debate and offer counter views in a sophisticated language framework over a variety of topic bases from politics to multiculturalism. Culture and authentic text are particularly emphasised in the study of a film, a text and an independently chosen and researched project. How are Languages taught? Students will work with a variety of sources, from film , authentic text, newspapers plus interacting regularly with a native Language Assistant. Students will be internally assessed at the end of year 12 and externally assessed at the end of year 13 with the AQA Examination Board. What examination board does MFL follow? Studying German helps me to appreciate the cultures and idiosyncrasies of Germany and German speaking countries. I find it extremely rewarding communicating in a second language. |
