Whilst studying geography at Desborough college, students build upon their intellectual curiosity and learn about the world around them. Geography helps students to understand the complexities and inter-connections of the modern life and understand how they can have a positive impact in the future.
Students engage in active learning about places, landscapes, ecosystems, culture, economies, societies and much more. The learning is consistently engaging and relevant to current world affairs. Students have opportunities to carry out fieldwork and learn through hands-on experience in both physical and human environments. Geographical enquiry encourages questioning, investigation and critical thinking about issues affecting the world and people’s lives, now and in the future. Pupils learn to think spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies, including geographical information systems (GIS), to obtain, present and analyse information. Many skills learnt during the study of Geography can be applied to many future pursuits and offers many transferable skills. These include literacy, numeracy, data analysis and interpretation, ICT skills, evaluation, team work and leadership. Geography inspires pupils to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.
